
Getting Custom IR Modules to Play Nice With Your Paint Line
If you’ve ever worked with automotive paint lines, you know the struggle. You need enough heat to cure the coating perfectly, but if you push it too hard, you risk warping the metal. It’s a delicate balance. That’s why we build our infrared (IR) modules to move with your robotic arms. Instead of a static heater, the heat source stays at the exact distance and angle it needs to be, no matter how weird the part’s shape is.
Making the Robot and Heater Talk
We don’t believe in overcomplicating things. We wire the IR modules directly into the robot’s PLC using high-speed interfaces. Here’s how it actually works: the system watches the robot’s XYZ coordinates. The moment the arm hits a specific panel or weld, the PLC kicks the power up. We use PID controllers to handle the ramp-up, which is a fancy way of saying we make sure the heat builds smoothly. It stops those annoying “hot spots” that happen when a robot lingers a second too long in one spot.
The Heavy Lifting: Hardware and Heat
We use short-wave infrared emitters because they actually get deep into the coating layers. We spec these for high wattage to get your cycle times down. But there’s a trade-off. High power means things gethot. Really hot. You’ll want to make sure your cooling blowers are sized right, otherwise, your housing is going to overheat during a 24/7 shift. To handle the stress of snapping on and off all day, we use reinforced quartz glass. It can take the thermal shock without cracking.
Getting It Running on Your Floor
When it comes to the actual install, it’s all about the focal point. You have to map the robot’s path so the heat hits exactly where it should. We include adjustable mounting brackets so you can tweak the gap between the lamp and the metal. Get it too close? You’ll scorch the paint. Too far? You’re wasting energy and time. Plus, we know that parts break. That’s why we use standardized connectors. When a lamp finally gives out, your maintenance crew can swap it in about five minutes and get the line moving again. No drama, no long outages.
