
Making Sure Your Wafer Tooling Doesn’t Crash and Burn
When you’re working with high-precision wafer tools, the margins are razor-thin. One tiny electrical leak? That’s it. Your entire batch of silicon is trash. That’s why we don’t do “sample checks” here. We don’t just test a few units and hope for the best. Every single lamp and heating element that leaves our shop goes through a full HiPot (withstand voltage) and insulation resistance test. Every one. No exceptions.
Stressing the System
Here is how it actually works. Most leaks happen because of a microscopic crack in the quartz or a seal that wasn’t quite clean. To find those, we push the equipment. We hit the units with a high-voltage stress test—way higher than what you’ll actually use in production. The goal is to force any hidden weakness to snap right here on our floor, instead of failing inside your tool. If the leakage current is too high? We scrap the tube. Simple as that.
The “Quiet” Side of Safety
While high-voltage tests find the holes, insulation resistance testing tells us about the overall health of the material. We check the Megohm (MΩ) values between the live elements and the grounded chassis. It’s a boring step, but it’s the one that keeps your breakers from tripping. More importantly, it keeps electrical noise out of your wafer’s environment, which is already sensitive enough.
The Real-World Stuff
Let’s be honest: no insulation lasts forever. Your tools go through constant thermal cycling—expanding and contracting over and over. Eventually, that wears down the seals. Even though our tests guarantee everything is perfect on Day 1, you’ve still got to keep an eye on your leakage current over time. A few tips from the shop floor: If you’re using high-wattage density elements, your connectors are taking a beating. Make sure your wiring can actually handle the peak heat, or you’ll end up melting the insulation on your lead wires. And if you’re pushing the voltage to the absolute edge of the spec, double-check your cooling. If the envelope softens, you’re headed for trouble.
