
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Putting infrared heaters in places like industrial bathrooms or wash-down areas is a bit of a gamble. Why? Because moisture and live electricity are a nightmare pairing. One splash in the wrong spot and you’ve got a short circuit or a leakage current on your hands. The only way to stop that is to get serious about the barrier between the hot internals and the outer shell. Stopping the leaks We don’t take chances here. We use double-insulated quartz envelopes. Think of the high-purity quartz as the first line of defense—it keeps the heating filament locked away. But in a wet zone, glass isn’t enough. That’s why we wrap everything in IP65-rated enclosures. It keeps the steam and direct sprays away from the wiring terminals where they can do the most damage. Here’s a pro tip: keep an eye on your “creepage and clearance.” If the gap between the live terminal and the grounded case is too small, moisture can actually build a tiny bridge for the electricity to travel across. To fix this, we use wider spacing and pour in some silicone potting to seal those connections tight. Materials and the “Ground” Rule Most heaters fail at the lamp ends. The heat is so intense it can chew through the insulation. To stop that, we use ceramic insulators. If these crack from thermal shock, the current jumps straight to the frame. Not a good day for anyone. And please,don’t skip the grounding. Bond that outer metallic housing to a dedicated earth ground. If a seal ever fails, you want your breaker to trip instantly. It’s much better to have a dead heater than a chassis that’s electrified and waiting for someone to touch it. The Trade-off Now, there’s a catch. When you add heavy-duty seals and beefy housings, the unit gets bigger. It also traps more heat around the wires. This is where people mess up. They use standard PVC wiring, which just melts and peels in these conditions. You’ll find yourself replacing those cables every six months. Instead, go with high-temperature fluoropolymer (PTFE) wiring. It’s a bit more of an investment, but it actually lasts.
